Windsurfing

Not only is BCYC an active dinghy sailing club, but we also have many windsurfing members. There is a friendly crowd of windsurfers of all ages and all standards who turn up regularly for recreational windsurfing, as well as some serious racers and freestylers who compete at national and international level.

BCYC is an ideal place to windsurf offering flat, sparkling clean water, open to the wind (the reservoir is raised up above the Somerset levels) and, above all, it is safe.

Andrew Lucas runs a popular series of learn to windsurf and other courses throughout the summer aimed primarily at adults.

For youngsters we have a very popular and successful Team 15 junior windsurfing club, called the Axbridge Animals, which operates on Wednesday evenings from April to September. This is for 8 to 15 year olds and includes absolute beginners and top junior racers. There is a crew of instructors and coaches and all parents/carers are encouraged to help whether they windsurf (yet!), or not.

There is a separate group Over2you for older teenagers who have progressed beyond Team 15 and are over 15 years old. The emphasis is on having fun and short board/planning skills or freestyle depending on the wind

The club is fortunate to own an excellent range of modern equipment for both these activities. Some equipment is also available to BCYC members to use during normal sailing times.

Every year we host Demo days arranged with Windsurfers’ World so that members and visitors can see and try a range of kit suitable for all levels of windsurfer.
